What is Flaxseed?

Flax, linseed or flaxseed is a plant that is a member of the Linaceae family, which includes 150 species of plants around the world. As flax plant is a blue flower and is mainly grown for their seeds. Flax seeds range in color from golden yellow to dark brown.


Is there a difference between flax seed and golden brown?

The short answer is no.

Despite the difference in color, both have the same nutritional characteristics. The nutritional value of flaxseed may vary due to weather conditions and the amount of natural light during the growth period. Some may prefer the taste of flaxseed golden, this is due to the tannin found in the seed coat, which for some can be sweeter, than the brown flax seed.


What is the difference between flaxseed and flaxseed oil?

The advantage of eating flax seed over flax oil is that flaxseed is a complete food, providing the benefits of omega-3, 6 and 9 EFA's, fiber, protein, plant lignans, vitamins, minerals and amino acids . Flax oil, expelled from the flax seed, contains the EFA, but not the fiber, protein and plant lignans (an anti-cancer agent). Flax seed contains approximately 40% oil.
